Some
full hosting clients need to update basic information on their websites
without having to generally maintain their sites themselves and without
relying on our operators to update and upload them. For these simple
changes the following notes will prove useful.
1.
An HTML editor
We assume that only minor text changes will be undertaken in these instances
but however simple the changes required you will need an HTML editor
with which to amend the text. For those customers using Windows, Microsoft
usually supply a very basic programme to open, edit and save web pages.
This is: Frontpage Express (not to be confused with Microsoft Frontpage)
a free programme most often found under Internet Explorer in the 'start'
menu. As an alternative customers can purchase Microsoft Frontpage a
considerably more sophisticated programme with many additional features
and usually costing £80 - £100. Note: Neither of these programmes
are used by professional designers and should be used for only basic
text changes or some other page errors may appear on the site.
2.
The pages for amendment
In order to avoid confusion and problems downloading the page for amendment
from the server, we supply the page(s) on CD. You can create a new folder
on the desktop so that you can easily identify your web material. Right
click on an empty part of the desktop; in the menu that appears click
on 'new' and select "new folder" in the next menu. You can name it with
any suitable title e.g website. From our CD copy the file(s) into the
new folder.
3. The editing programme
Whether you are using Frontpage Express, Microsoft Frontpage or another
editor you will be able to open your file(s) and see your page in editing
mode. At this point you may wish to learn a little about the programme
features and we suggest once the programme is opened you select the
'Help' menu and the "about.................." option to find details
on the programme functions. However, if all you have to do is change
one or two words, you can click on the appropriate words and amend them
as though you were in any other text editor. In general though web page
editors act somewhat differently in many respects and if you need to
do more you should print out the "Help" pages already mentioned.
4. Saving the details
We assume you will not attempt to change other features on the web page
and in particular any text links. This could upset the links on the
website when the page is uploaded unless you know exactly what you are
doing.
When the corrections are done 'save' your changes.
(You always have the original on CD if you need to copy the original
again). Now you are ready to upload.
5. About uploading
When you upload your page it will always replace the page with the same
name on the server and therefore no other links will be affected. If
you upload and find an error in your page, you can simply upload again
after making the necessary corrections.
You will upload using an FTP (File transfer protocol) programme. This
is a dedicated programme and is better than using the built in functions
of Microsoft Frontpage for negotiating the server security. A simple
programme (WS-FTP) is on a separate disk for you to use. Simply transfer
it (copy) to the desktop.
6. WS-FTP
A separate instruction sheet is available detailing the functions of
WS-FTP which is extremely easy to use. Click
Here to view it.
