In general
you should be able to upload your website with most FTP programmes,
however, if you find you are having problems, this could be for a number
of reasons, including incompatibility with the security on the server.
The FTP program - WS-FTP - does not cause such problems and the lite
(or student) version can be downloaded free of charge from various software
websites (one is www.tucows.com - simply put ws-ftp in their search
facility for details on downloading. It is quite a small programme and
downloads very quickly). Full programme notes download with the programme
itself.
If you have any difficulty uploading, please e-mail: support@mclweb.co.uk
with the problem and any error messages appearing.
Setting
Up and Connecting to the Server
1. Once connected to the Internet open ws-ftp by double left clicking
on the icon. (A shortcut may have been installed on the desktop). Or
look in the 'start' menu under applications. If you are not sure where
it is look under 'find' in the start menu and enter 'WS-FTP' in the
search panel.
(Full host customers should copy the programme files from the CD to
their prepared folder on the desktop).
2. 'Session
properties window' should appear, if not click 'connect' in bottom left
hand corner of the main FTP programme window.
3. Under
'general' tab at the top of the 'session properties' window, click 'new'.
Put in an identifying profile name i.e. your Company name. ( These details
may already be correct on our supplied disk).
4. Host Name/Address should be as in the enclosed letter or as advised.
(or as already set up on disk).
5. Host type: Select 'Automatic Detect'.
6. User ID: as specified, your ftp username as enclosed or as supplied
by us. (or as already set up on disk).
7. Password: as specified, your ftp password as supplied by us (click
'save pwd' if you wish). (or as already set up). Account box can be
left blank. No other tabs or option need to be selected unless you experience
'log on' problems (see note 11 below).
8. Then click OK. After this is set up initially, you will only need
to select the correct profile name and all other details will be automatically
selected.
9. After clicking 'ok' the programme should login to the server. The
process can be seen in the box at the bottom left of the window. If,
for any reason, you receive a 'login failed' message simply try again.
Repeated failure (two or three times) may indicate a problem. See 11
below or call support for further information.
10. You should see your directory details on the server in the right
hand window.
11. You are then ready to transfer files.
|
Should
you experience any 'log on' problems (message in red saying something
like 'login failed') you should first of all try again. If the
same message appears try the following: In the 'session properties'
window select the 'Advanced' tab and tick (or untick if already
ticked) the small box at the bottom labelled 'Passive transfers'.
Click 'Apply' and 'OK' and then try connecting again.

Uploading
Files
There
are two windows. The left one is your computer, the right is the remote
server.
1. If
uploading, the left window needs to be showing the files for uploading.
If it isn't, put in (or select from the drop down list at the top),
the location of your folder. For example if you have a folder on your
desktop entitled WEBSITE the address would be: c:/windows/desktop/website.
Press return if necessary. (If files are on a floppy disc, change the
address at the top, where it is showing c:/ to a:/ (or other appropriate
drive) and press 'return'. In the window all the files on the floppy
disc or CD should now be shown).
2. Before
uploading files, under the windows are 3 radio buttons: ASCII, Binary
and AUTO. Check the auto box. (Binary will also work in most cases).
To
upload a file
Click on the file you want to upload and it becomes highlighted (you
can select multiple files by shift-clicking). Then click on the arrow
in the middle which is pointing towards the right. You should then see
the files(s) appear in the right hand window.
Full hosting customers updating their details for the first time
should upload one file at a time. It is only necessary to ensure that
the file(s) to be uploaded has exactly the same name as the file it
replaces.
Otherwise make sure the files are uploaded to correct directory (for
example /images if you have to upload pictures). You can move around
your directory on the server the same way as on your computer by double
clicking to get into a folder.
To move
up a file structure level, click green 'up' arrow, or in the box under
'Remote site' title, you can select a directory level i.e. /mclweb or
/mclweb/images etc.
Note:
When you upload, files with the same name will simply replace those
on the server. If you have changed only one file for example, you only
need to upload that file. All existing links will be maintained.
To
Download
1. Make
sure you have selected the area on your local system (computer) that
you want the files to be downloaded to. Whether this is on the c:/ or
a:/ (or other) drive. Make sure you are inside the correct folder also.
2. It
is then a similar procedure. Select the files on the remote site that
you want downloaded, either one at a time or altogether. Then click
the arrow pointing left towards the local system and you should see
the files appear on your computer or disc.
3. Once
you have finished you then click 'close' in the left bottom corner.
This will disconnect you from the server.
Note:
When you download the originals will remain on the server unless you
choose to delete them.
