Before
you can use your own domain e-mail facility you need to set up your
e-mail programme to collect and send mail from your own domain server.
The example below is for the popular programme "Outlook Express", but
others like Eudora or Navigator perform the same function. If you currently
use an ISP like Freeserve or AOL you will NOT be able to send
your own domain e-mail via their out going server although you will
be able to collect. You will therefore need to use us for your own domain
business use and if you wish to retain another ISP you will need to
be careful about your configuration. Please call us if you are having
problems. See also note below.
If you are currently awaiting set-up of your e-mail then a password
and code will be enclosed on a separate sheet.
Below are instructions for setting up your e-mail once you have received
your username and
password from us.

Note:
In different versions of 'Windows' (95,98,ME,NT or 2000 etc.)
or e-mail programmes the options may vary slightly, but in general
these details can be found in most mail programmes and a little
careful searching will reveal the correct options.

Set-up
Double
click 'Outlook Express' icon on desktop (if not on desktop look under
- Programs - Internet Explorer - Outlook Express)
Once in the Outlook Express window click 'Tools', then highlight
'accounts' and the Internet
accounts window opens.
Select 'Mail' and then select button 'Add' (on the right)
and 'Mail' again.
You will now be taken through the new account by a Wizard.
First enter your name or the company name.
Click NEXT.
Insert an e-mail address for your domain i.e. mail@yourdomain.co.uk
(where "yourdomain" is the name of your registered domain. If it is
.com then insert this instead of .co.uk)
Click NEXT.
Under incoming mail server select -'POP 3'
Under incoming mail server enter as this format: mail.mclweb.net
(this occasionally varies, you will have been notified of this).
Under "outgoing mail" (smtp) server you will need to enter the name
of your ISP's mail server.
This will usually be relay.mclweb.net. for our service. (If for
example you use the Federation for Small Business, it is mail.FSBDial.co.uk).
If you are not sure, you will need to contact your ISP for details or
look at your existing e-mail "send and collect" details and use the
same SMTP information.
|
Note:
You cannot use AOL, Compuserve or some of the more popular general
ISP's to send your own domain e-mail as they use dedicated mail
facilities or restrict your ability to send mail that does not
have their details embedded. However, you can usually tell if
you can use your existing ISP for your own domain e-mail. If you
have to use a separate programme (like Outlook Express) to collect
mail from your existing ISP, then they will usually be O.K. to
send and collect your own domain materials. Send a test e-mail
in which the sender name (yours) is your own domain i.e. info@your
domain.co.uk. If it is returned undelivered, with an error message,
then you may have problems. A simple solution is to use our business
'dial-up' service for Internet Access. It is free, fast and simple
to configure. Please ask for details and your access codes. Call
us in 0870 403 0253 / 0870 403 0254 and it will be set up immediately.

Click

Select
"Log on using" and "POP account name": enter your domain name log on
details (usually a number supplied by us)

supplied as it is case
sensitive).
DO NOT tick "logon using Secure Password Authentication."
Click NEXT.
Friendly name.
You can
enter anything here such as your company name in order to recognise
the account
amongst others.
Click NEXT.
Connection Type
Unless
you have special arrangements select "connect using my phone line".
Click NEXT.
Dial up Connection
Your
ISP connection. You may be using out 'dial-up' service in which case
you can check our 'dial-up' notes if necessary. If others exist already
they will be shown. Highlight out dial-up (MCLWEB)
or your preferred choice of those offered.
Click NEXT and then FINISH and the account is complete.
You will now go back to 'Internet accounts' and your account will be
shown. You may at this point
wish to highlight one of these and click on "make default" account.
This will then be used to dial-up automatically.
Sending and
Collecting E-mail
Sending:
Check that
you are on-line.
In the Outlook Express window select 'Compose Message'
Write the e-mail then select 'send'
A figure '1' appears by the small 'Outbox' icon on the left (if you
have it showing) and will
disappear when the mail is sent. (This depends on the options you have
chosen). If you have
asked for "mail to be sent at once" it will go as soon as an 'on-line'
connection is available. If you have specified a manual 'send' you will
have to select 'send and receive' when a 'dial-up' will be
offered so that it can forward and collect mail. Your e-mail will then
be filed in the 'Sent Items'
folder and you can delete them if you wish. You can optionally send
mail using the 'tools' menu as below.
Collecting E-mail from your mail server :
Select
'Tools' from the menu bar.
Then 'Send and receive' - then highlight the account that you created
or select all accounts.
The programme will advise you of progress and place any mail in the
"Inbox".
The programme can be set up in many different ways so that you can have
a number of options
(like deleting, read mail automatically, dialling up whenever you open
the programme and
collecting mail or waiting for you to do it manually).
There are many reasons why you will not always send or collect mail
immediately or successfully.
In these cases it is better to simply 'send' or 'collect' again.
Any particular problems will be shown in the 'report' on progress given
by Outlook Express.
To test your system send an e-mail to your domain (e.g. test@yourdomain.co.uk)
and then use
the system to retrieve the mail. If successful the mail will be placed
in the 'IN' folder and you can click on the icon to check the mail you
tested previously.
