Internet
Explorer is the browser most people use to browse the Internet, and
Outlook Express sends and collects your e-mail. Once you have set up
your accounts they can be configured to your own requirements both for
'dialling up' and various other features. The following details explain
how to do this. These notes assume that you have already set up a 'dial-up',
to connect with us, from our 'dial-up' notes. Ask for a copy of these
or refer to the notes on our website.
If you
use another provider as well as ourselves for dial-up or e-mail you
will still be able to utilise these notes but you will need to specify
exactly which mail account the programme should use when you send any
mail.

CREATE
A SHORTCUT:
Windows users will have their computers configured in
different ways so that items currently showing on their desktop
will vary. It is useful to have both the Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express icons visible on the desktop, (one is a large
blue 'e', and the other an 'envelope with arrows'). if they are
not, create a shortcut as follows:
To find the Internet Explorer folder:
1. Click the 'start' menu.
2. Click on programmes and a programmes menu opens.
3. Right click on either "Internet Explorer" or 'Outlook Express'.
4. In the menu highlight 'create shortcut' and release. Now a
shortcut of each will be created (usually at the end of the menu
of window you are in).
5. Drag the shortcut to the desktop. |
INTERNET EXPLORER
HOW
TO: Personalise Internet Explorer Settings back to the top
(i). Now you can open Internet Explorer by double clicking on its icon
on the desktop.
If an
existing 'dial-up' window appears cancel it or select "work off-line".
(ii).
Go to the 'tools' menu at the top of the browser window. Select "Internet
Options".
This group
of options enables you to set up Explorer in the way you prefer. Most
of them require you to enter some details or accept what is currently
the default.
NOTE:
Depending on the version of Windows (95,98,ME,NT, 2000 or XP)
and/or the version of the programme installed, the precise naming
of the options may vary, (e.g. connection may be called Network
on some versions). However, the options will be available and
you may need to look under a different heading in the various
options boxes. |
HOW TO: Make MCLWEB your default dial-up back to the top
There is only one area that you need to change if you wish to automatically
use our dial-up when you open 'Internet Explorer'.
(Note: This procedure is unnecessary if our connection is the
only one you have setup).
1. From
the five or six tags at the top of the window select "connection".
2. You
are then offered the various dial-up's on the computer. Highlight Mclweb
and then press the "set default" button.
3. Now
Internet Explorer will use the Mclweb dial-up when it opens.
HOW
TO: Specify the first website you go to when going online back to the top
1. If you wish the browser to go straight to a particular opening page
on the WWW when 'Internet Explorer' has dialled up, you can do this
by clicking on the "general" tag at the top.
2. In
the first box put our name (http:/www.mclweb.co.uk) which will enable
you to check other details on our website if necessary on start up.
Alternatively, you could put in your favourite search engine for example.
3. Set
any other options you would like and then Click OK when your're finished.
TIP: Restart
the computer for the options to take full effect.
REFRESHING
STORED WEBPAGES ON YOUR COMPUTER:
In some cases existing
sites may already be stored or 'cached' on your computer and in
these cases 'Internet Explorer' will open these and will not 'dial
up' when you request them, unless you click on an option that
requires the programme to get further information. In these cases
you can either put in the new address you require in the 'Internet
Explorer' window or press the "refresh" icon at the top of the
window. You will then be offered the option of going on-line and,
selecting this, will cause 'Internet Explorer' to 'dial-up' the
number. |
OUTLOOK EXPRESS OPTIONS
PANEL back to the top
Because
Outlook Express performs more operations than, say, Internet Explorer
and customises its operation more to suit individuals, it is not
possible to cover all of the possible operations in these short
notes. However, Outlook Express shares many of its dial-up settings
with Internet Explorer and if they are generally OK you can leave
them as they are without causing problems, if you need to amend
them press the 'change' button and follow the instructions. |
Outlook
Express is a programme that will collect and send mail. Its folder is
usually found in the same location as Internet Explorer and to create
a shortcut on the desktop (if you do not already have one), follow the
same instructions as for Internet Explorer.
If you
already use Outlook Express for sending and collecting your e-mail via
another provider you will need to amend various settings to ensure this
all works satisfactorily when using your own domain. You may wish
to refer to our notes on setting up e-mail and configure all options
at the same time although this is not essential.
Bearing
this in mind you can configure your system as follows:
1. Open
the Outlook Express programme by double clicking on its icon on the
desktop.
2. If
it attempts to dial-up -cancel the box. In some cases you may need to
cancel several boxes that present themselves.
3. Go
to the "Tools" menu at the top of the window and then select 'options'.
Most of
the options can be defined to suit your own set of requirements, but
you will need to check the 'dial-up' option about six items to the right. Note: Different versions of Windows (95,98,ME,NT,2000
or XP) and/or versions of Outlook Express may offer slightly different
options or the same options under a different name (i.e. 'Connection'
may be 'Network').
4. Here
you can make your choice of the options presented. If you wish to use
the MCLWEB dial-up on start up tick: "Dial this connection" and then
select MCLWEB from the list on the right.
Note that
if you have only one 'dial-up' configuration, that is all you will be
offered.
FINALLY...
Now
that you are familiar with the options you can amend your choices
at any time.
However, as we have already pointed out, a number of factors affect
the configuration of the 'dial-up' and you may have to live with
some of the more 'quirky' features of this programme, including
failing to take any notice of some of the options you require!
To set up your specific e-mail options see our notes on "setting
up e-mail and Outlook Express". |
